burano

torchello

there seems to be a lot of land for sale on the island of torchello, there is also a frozen pond, an alarming number of cats, bare trees, two stunning churches and a restaurant with piping hot spaghetti alle vongone. there is also a massive rendering of the "last judgement" in mosaics from the 12th or 13th century.

clothes

the clothes i treasure most are the ones i have found - in piles on the side of the road in Melbourne, in grandparents wardrobes, given to me by mum or her friends. These clothes are always beautifully disheveled, musty from long years in cupboards, delicately chewed by the tiny mouths of moths, stained relics. Their imperfections speak of a lifetime of wear, of contact with the body, i like the way luxurious silk becomes tattered, faded, it reminds me of all that utopian modernist architecture, exquisite - stark white buildings becoming stained and leaky, worn out over time.

it is snowing at peggy's place

pieces

recently I have seen: the beginning of snow while crossing the accademia bridge, a robin, a young man training to be a gondolier struggling up and down the grand canal and a pigeon baptising itself in an old well.

little things

i try not to get too attached to objects but some things seem to wriggle their way into my everyday life and become a bit special even though they are cracked, imperfect and worn... tiny pair of glasses inspired by Adolf Loos's perfect set of drinking glasses- one of the few domestic / utilitarian objects he ever designed, a small lime green bowl apparently used to make little steamed puddings in the 50's, a delicate pair of miniature china cups, a chunk of obsidian - volcanic rock found around Rotoiti, and a small hand made sage green ceramic vessel cracking in a cob-webby beautiful kind of way.
