"riding mountain rambler"
laura fedynyszyn

one day, when my dad was a very small schoolboy he saw an elephant as he was walking home. no-body believed him, but he was finally vindicated when it turned out that an elephant had indeed escaped a travelling circus and was wandering through vestiges of native bush in the small city of hamilton, new zealand. everyone seems to have stories of magical encounters with animals, but this is one of my favourites. canadian print-maker laura fedynyszyn is a toronto-based artist who re-constructs and creates such encounters through her painstaking and endearing practice.

fedynyszn tries to work only from animals either stuffed or living whom she has met in real life whether it be a giant feral raccoon or a small bird that collided with her window pane. the above riding mountain rambler is a bison and is based on sketches and photographs taken during a road trip to riding mountain national park in manitoba where herds of bison roam free.

prints such as this begin with a quick sketch on tracing paper which is then transferred onto lino where details are filled in with a sharpie. then the actual carving process begins. fedynyszyn proofs the final carving on newsprint and then eventually prints up final versions. old maps, magazines and decorative papers are frequently printed on by fedynyszyn. sometimes she uses maps of the places where the animal is actually from. all of her printing is done by hand using a barren-no press which means that fedynyszyn has the kind of control she can only get by working entirely by hand.

fedynyszyn is quick as a whip and has stories to tell. you can see more of her wonderful work at http://www.laurafedy.com/.
